1918 Sergeant Hugh Cairns of the 46th Battalion, C. E. F. at Valenciennes, captured machine guns, took prisoners, led assaults, and was wounded multiple times and subsequently died the next day. Sergeant Cairns received a posthumous Victoria Cross for his exemplary conduct in these actions.
