1917 Private John Pattison of the 50th Battalion, C.E.F. at Vimy Ridge threw hand grenades into the German emplacement, killing and wounding some of the enemy. Before the five remaining defenders could recover, Private Pattison charged the position and overcame them to earn the Victoria Cross.
