1942 Lieutenant Colonel Charles Merritt of the South Saskatchewan Regiment walked calmly across a bridge over the River Scie, near Dieppe, at least four times under a storm of fire to conduct parties of his men to the eastern side. For his action Lieutenant Colonel Merritt earned the Victoria Cross.
