HMCS Stadacona, Land Base ???

Post by georgetanksherman » Thu Apr 02, 2020 4:53 am

Greetings, not sure if anyone can help, but figured I would give it a try. I have two individuals that died while at the Royal Canadian Base in Nova Scotia called HMCS Stadacona. Looking for the cause of death, all I can find is that they died.

Telegraphist Harry Kenneth MacKenzie, V/25137, R.C.N.V.R.
Bloomfield, New Jersey, U.S.A. Died: October 7, 1946
Telegraphist MacKenzie is buried at Pictou (Haliburton) Cemetery, Nova Scotia, Canada

Assistant Cook Joseph Emile Gaudette, V/3768, R.C.N.V.R.
Lewiston, Maine, U.S.A. Died: October 4, 1947
Assistant Cook Gaudette is buried at Montreal (Notre Dame Des Neiges) Cemetery, Quebec, Canada

Appreciate any help !

Cheers !

Hey George, I’ll check these for you. Yes, during the war (and until our Armed forces were unified in 1964), RCN shore establishments were name HMCS like our ships......Stadacona is in Halifax.

Can’t find anything that tells me exactly of “why” he died, but from his records, he was medically discharged and on his records it says why....so he may have died because of his condition. Canadian authorities classified his death as “in service” (meaning his military service attributed to his death).

His records show he served at sea, and in fact was a survivor of the sinking of HMCS Windflower

Commissioned: 15 May 1941

Built for the RN, she was commissioned on 20 Oct 1940 as HMS Windflower, at Quebec City. She arrived at Halifax on 31 Oct 1940 and left on 06 Dec 1940 with convoy HX.94 for the U.K. There, at Scotsoun, she completed fitting out on 02 Mar 1941, following which she went to Tobermory to work up. Later in Mar 1941 she was assigned to EG 4 (RN), Greenock, escorting convoys between the U.K. and Iceland. On 15 May 1941 she was transferred to the RCN and commissioned as HMCS Windflower. She left Aultbea on 10 Jun 1942 for St. John's with OB.332, and on arrival transferred to Newfoundland Command. After two round trips between St. John's and Iceland, she arrived at Liverpool, N.S., on 29 Aug 1942 for a short refit, resuming her ocean escort duties in mid-Oct 1942. She made one more round trip to Iceland, and on 07 Dec 1941, while making her second trip, was rammed and sunk in convoy SC.58 by the Dutch freighter Zypenberg in dense fog off the Grand Banks. Twenty-three of her complement were lost.

Appreciate the help Temujun, it's handy having a nurse for a wife, she can explain all these medical terms ! Appreciate all the help, and I found another Royal Canadian Navy land base, the H.M.C.S. Hunter in Windsor, Ontario, Canada.

Detroit, Michigan, U.S.A. Died: March 3, 1946

Able Seaman Naish is buried at:
Windsor (Victoria) Memorial Park, Ontario, Canada
