Took a look at everything again (in case I missed something) and it “seems” that DND did give them the name etc, as you said.

They may have gotten his names of the embarkation rolls......I can’t find which ship or those rolls.

So, hopefully they’ll have luck posting the info in newspapers.....unless some other clue come’s up

YES, this isn’t making sense. How do they know his Name and Rank and regiment and which day he embarked.

I would like to see where they found this info.....it then may help.

I suspect they just searched for J.I. Andrews and returned the rank and embarkation date of the first record.

Yes, it would be interesting to know if they confirmed that Service Number or not.

On another side of things, I only found two J.I. Andrews buried in Canada and neither seem to fit (one is a woman, the other born in 1878).

I did find a Lte-Col. J. I. Andrews in the armoured corps,

These units were closely followed by the first wave of tanks of the 14th Canadian Army Tank Battalion (Calgary Regiment) commanded by Lt-Col. J.I. Andrews.

This J.I. Andrews of the 14th Canadian Army Tank Battalion I believe turns out to be JOHN GILBY ANDREWS or Lieutenant Colonel "Johnny" Andrews who was killed in action at Dieppe.

Also while looking through the records of the lost, a service number just 8 digits off came up,

Were service numbers assigned consecutively? If so, this is another item that doesn't add up, if J.I. Andrews was B606688 as we suspect, Joseph Raincourt here was lost in 1942 and his service number was B606680, no way J. I. Andrews embarked in 1945 if that's his service number and they were given out consecutively.

Update: I see now the suspected Regiment Number is B606638, still very close.

B606??? is a NRMA number, so not eligible for overseas service until late 44. Most didn't go until early 45 or later, so a Feb 45 embarkation fits Andrews. Rancourt is buried in Ontario, so he did not die overseas, consistent with another NRMA man in 1942.
