Re: Help with Uncle's WWII Service Record

Agree with Phil's review. Don't do much Italy but suspect 6. is CMF - Central Mediterranean Force aka Italy. Fits with move from UK/NW Europe to Italy. Somewhat unique with someone serving in France and later transferring to Italy, don't recall seeing that before. Don't know the official difference ...

Re: Help with Uncle's WWII Service Record

1. Yes, Internal Combustion. To distinguish from drivers of horses in the early war / pre-war period where they were still in use 2. Cdn Army Canada vs Cdn Army Overseas. Don't know but probably related to different admin between the two 3. Agree with BFBSM. Might guess Regtl Pay rather than Light. ...

Re: Trooper Russell R M Shier

The War Diary for May 45 is here, about 100 pages: https://heritage.canadiana.ca/view/oocihm.lac_reel_t12765/975 No specific mention of the incident that I can see in the daily narrative. Deeper in the month are Pt I Orders and casualty summaries that show one other killed and one wounded on 2 May 4...

Re: Stone at Tyne Cot Cemetery

Years of fighting in the same area led to known graves being disturbed/destroyed. Known as a 'Special Memorial', they are mentioned briefly on the CWGC.org page for Tyne Cot, there are a significant number there. If you look him up on that site, you may be able to piece together a bit more through t...

Re: Confusion with RCAF airman

Doesn't match with how I would pronounce those names, but could one possibly be a phonetic mixup with a slightly odd pronunciation? Alternatively, a bad transcription from some kind of hand-written list? If for example I only saw the Weight spelling once, I might lean to one of those options. If you...

Re: Joseph Samuel ELKO SM93311 RCE

Same blog has unit serials for all units mobilized with 1st and 2nd Divs, but no sign of 482B

Re: Joseph Samuel ELKO SM93311 RCE

I suspect 482B is a unit serial, but have been unable to find any mention of it. Clive Law published a reference for all unit serials but it's out of print.

Re: Passive Air Defence

Sorry for the thread hijack, splitting was a good idea. Interesting digression, something I'll keep an eye out for. I don't recall ever seeing anything about PAD in infantry WDs, so maybe something a Field Coy was tasked with in a Brigade area? A few pairs of sappers sprinkled around the countryside?

Passive Air Defence

That's what I arrived at too. Passive air defence seems to be mostly about siting, concealment, camouflage etc., so beyond the scope of a section of men. In our context, basically sentries against air attack?
