Not sure if this thread is still active but... my grandfathers name is on this list. Where else can I find this? How can I find out more? There may be more helpful information out there where ever this document came from. - Thank you.

Every post on this site is “active”……so tell us more, who is your grandfather and we’ll see what else we can find for you.

Cheers

Thanks for responding! HQ Company Sheet #5 on your photos above.

M11422 Pte. Peter Dick
Born November 26th, 1915 in Gnadentue (?) USSR
Trade on enlistment - Carpenter
Mother & Father - Russian
Religion - L of E (? Possibly C of E?)
Enlisted - Calgary Alta, Canada on November 22nd 1939
Married December of 1941 in Sussex England, Hove disctrict, volume 2b page 736 to Molly K Patching, I was told she was brought back to Canada as a War Bride but have no proof.

I have also been told that his surname was changed to Dick and I do not know what it would have been prior to that.

Thank you,
Mo.

Found information.

But first, have you ordered his military records? From LAC. To do this Peter Dick must have been passed away for 20 years. So you take his date of death, add 20 years, and you can request his complete military records. If you need more info on that let us know, we can advise.

OK, what I’ve found so far.

He was wounded. Found him on a casualty list (below)

After I found this, I then went to the MAY 1945 War Diaries…..at that time (the war had just ended in Europe), Canadian Military HQ’s sent out to EVERY UNIT in the Canadian Military a list of all the Officer’s and Men who were Killed, wounded, Died of wounds, POW etc

His name was on the list so I was able to confirm that he was wounded on the 19 July 1944. Below is the documents I spoke of, and I’ve included the “cover sheet” that gives you the info on HOW to DECODE the record:

I then went to the War Diaries of the Regiment for the 19 July 1944, shown below, and you can see how the Regiment was in action, and then incurred quite a few casualties. Their are no names, but we can assume he was wounded in someway during this action

ALSO, in the May 1945 War Diaries I found a list of men, and their “trade qualifications”…..he was qualified as a Carpenter “B”. This tells me that he “may” have been in the Pioneer Platoon at this time, as they had “tradesmen” who could do all sort of work in support of the Battalion.

FINALLY, well searching, I found a newspaper article that places him in a “little bit of trouble” in Calgary. It may NOT be him, but when the Battalion left for the UK a couple of months later, his name was on it AND he is the ONLY man who’s last name was “Dick” in the Battalion at this time.

I will NOT post this info, if you’d like to see it, send my your e-mail by Private Message on this site, and I will forward it to you

So far, this is all I’ve found, but will search a bit more to see if I can pick up any more info.

Cheers

Wow, you are amazing, how did you find all of this? I have been searching public records for days!

I only recently began really digging into his history, a friend actually found your post for me. I've come across the LAC website, have not applied as of yet but do intend to, more info is always apprecaited. He passed away in 1974, I have no death certificate but I do have a picture of the tomb stone. I have been gathering as much information as I can before submitting a request.

One document here has sprung a memory, if I recall correctly I remember my mother saying he was shot in the shoulder but this was many years ago now. Could you elaborate on what kind of work would be typical of a carpenter during that time?

I will send you my e-mail, thank you so much for your time, I really apprecaite it!

I’ve been doing this for years……I have lots of sources and “where to go” to find info.

OK, he may “NOT” have been part of the Pioneer Platoon, but sometimes when they received a “trade qualification”, especially in an Infantry Battalion, it was usually to “fill” an authorized position in the Battalion…and the Pioneer Section of the Battalion had various “trade positions” within it.

Pioneer Platoon, they had different types of “tradesmen” and were like a mini Military Engineer (RCE) unit. They could help set up camps, build things that the Unit needed, they also would do “engineer” type work, laying mines, breaching minefields, help constructing hasty fortifications or mortar or machine gun pits etc, constructing small quick bridges, help construct HQ’s facilities etc etc……….just a section of “jack of all trades” type of work. Many times the RCE (Royal Canadian Engineers) sections were assigned to Infantry Battalions (for short periods, mainly in assault functions) and the Pioneer Section would work with the RCE troops to do what needed to be done. Usually this was to build “light Kapok bridges” (a small floating bridge for infantry to cross small rivers etc).

Of course they were ALWAYS, soldiers first, and could drop tools and pick up their rifles to join the fight when needed. Many times the work they did was “under fire” so to speak, to help the battalion cross rivers, or build defensive’s.

Hope the above helps a bit

EDIT: Here’s is a description of what a Pioneer Platoon did source in on the bottom of the page. this is the “British organization” but the Canadian Army was usually organized in a similar fashion:

Here is a bit more information on the Pioneer Platoon in a Cdn Infantry Battalions during ww2. Again, I’m not saying he was part of that platoon, just my “best guess” from the information I’ve seen to date on him

You can see the Pioneer Platoon was part of ‘Support Company’ and was organized into 3 Sections (2 Assault Sections and 1 Pioneer Section). These sections were most likely very small, probably 6 men in each section, then a Platoon HQ’s of 1 Officer and 2 OR’s (probably a Platoon Sgt and a radioman). I would also suggest that the “tradesmen” were part of the Pioneer Section
