Hudson, AM812, May 15, 1942

Greetings, again looking for some help, if possible, with Hudson, AM812, RCAF 407 Sqdn, May 15, 1942. I currently have;

Hudson, AM812, May 15, 1942

Aircraft was observed dropping bombs that struck the port side of one ship but the aircraft appears to have been shot down shortly after by ships flak guns.

Crew:
Pilot: Flt Sgt N.C. Doehn, R/75646, RCAF, Kitchener, Ontario, Canada - SAGE WAR CEMETERY, Germany
Obs: P/O S.R. Balden, J/8602, RCAF, West Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada - SAGE WAR CEMETERY, Germany
Wop/Gnr: Flt Sgt D. McDonald, R/73761, RCAF, Chateauguay Basin, Quebec, Canada - Missing, listed on Runnymede Memorial
Wop/Gnr: Not currently known – P.O.W. ??????

The info that I have found listed that 2 crew men were recovered and buried, 1 crew man is listed as missing, and 1 crew member is listed as surviving, captured and P.O.W., but I can not find his name anywhere !

Wow, really glad I asked Temujin, was not aware that P/O Creeden in Hudson AM864 and crew were killed, thought they had crash landed due to the damage, but were okay, got to go back in there and change the status on that crew, May they R.I.P. and always be Remembered. appreciate all the help and assistance

Your welcome George. When reading the record, this one operation “almost” wiped out the entire Squadron, with only 4 of its 12 aircraft returning safely to base. A disastrous day for the Squadron BUT it also seems to indicate that they dealt heavy damage to the ships in the convoy.

The records on the following days indicate the Squadron didn’t fly any more missions, as they didn’t have enough aircraft or crews so had to wait until both were replenished.

Seems like most if not all squadrons had a time or two like this, I just finished going through RCAF 404 Squadron reading about their experience on "Black Friday" February 9, 1945 where they lost 6 Bristol Beaufighters on the same mission !
