426 Sqdn, Halifax LW206
Aircraft LW206 took off from Linton-on-Ouse on bombing mission to Volkel, Germany. Aircraft crashed in England en route to target, inexplicably went into a flat spin during a routine turn. Only some of the crew could bail out safely. They crashed near a USAAF base at Duxford, personnel from which raced to the crash scene where five were killed when the bomb load went up, along with a civilian. The crew members that were killed are buried in England. I have found 3 of the Americans that were killed trying to help with the rescue, does anyone know the other two individuals and the civilian ???

Wayne Marsh was killed on duty when a RCAF Halifax crashed near Duxford airfield on 3 September 1944. He and Louis Streb had rushed to crash scene to help rescue the crew when the aircraft exploded, killing them both. He is buried at Rockfield Cemetery, Veedersburg, Indiana.

I believe, this is the location of the crash. Point marked on the map, and I’ve marked the location of Duxford USAAF. The crash was near “Home Farm” cottages

Re: 426 Sqdn, Halifax LW206
I am going with the assumption that because 1st Lt. Streb and 1st Lt. Shoemaker were Commanders of their group that they are the ones that were killed in the jeep along with Sgt. Marsh as there driver.
On the "Preceedings" Report form, at the top it said that there were 5 Americans killed, 1 Civilian, and then down on the bottom of the report it said that 3 Americans were killed in the jeep when a tree fell on it along with one other American was killed, and 1 Civilian, but yet there is no mention of the other 1 or 2 Americans that were killed ??? Maybe the info is not available !
But, as always, Thank You so much for the info that you were able to share ! Hope all is well, And a Very Merry Christmas to One and All, with wishes of a Safe, but Happy New Year !
Cheers
George
