F/O Charles Stenius Young, RCAF

Have another Texan, F/O Charles Stenius Young, Dayton, Texas (Not Ohio) joined the RCAF fall of 1941, went through flight training in Canada, sent to the United Kingdom, was assigned to an RAF Bomber Squadron, completed 22 Combat missions with Bomber Command. Transferred to USAAF March 1943, assigned to 409th Bomb Squadron, 93rd Bomb Group, flew 25 missions in B-24's including Ploesti. After his 25th combat mission, he requested to go to fighters, stated he did not want to be responsible for others' lives anymore. Assigned 496th Fighter Training Squadron Group, training on P-38's, sadly on June 6, 1944, while flying P-38 42-67710, he engages in flying acrobatics to low and crashed, and was killed, he is buried in San Antonio, Texas.

Does anyone have any info on what RAF Squadron he was assigned to for his 22 Missions ?

1st LT. Charles Stenius "Bubba" Young (1920-1944) 02044927

Charles Stenius "Bubba" Young was the son of Ray Vaughn Young (1893-1974) and Esther Young (1895-1985).

In 1920, the family lived in Allen County, Louisiana, where Ray was a rice farmer. Besides Ray and Esther, the family included Esther Rae (Young) Drawhorn (1915-2008), Marie Young (b. ca. 1918) and CHARLES S. "Bubba" YOUNG (1920-1944).

It was around 1924 that the family moved to Dayton, Texas, where Ray became the superintendent of the local sawmill. After the mill closed, he bought his own business, called Young's.

From the book, "War Stories," we find the following information about LT. YOUNG: In the fall of 1941, YOUNG enlisted with the Royal Canadian Air Force. In March, 1943, he would be commissioned as a flight officer with the Army Air Corps. In August, 1943, he was part of the Allied raid on Ploesti, Romania when they bombed the oil refineries. He had written a letter home, telling of his experience in bombing Ploesti in great detail.

He would serve with the AAF HQ & HQ SQ

Less than a year later, LT. YOUNG was killed in a "routine training flight." At the time, he was serving with the 554FTS/496thFTG, stationed in Goxhill, England, UK. Fighter Training Group when, on June 6, 1944, LT. YOUNG was killed while flying a P-38J Lightening when he crashed near Spaldington, England.

LT. CHARLES S. YOUNG is buried at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, San Antonio, Bexar, TX. Findagrave.com: #1354466

Thanks as always Temujin, saw the RCAF wings, so it got my attention, he is another on my list of "Incomplete" info, so I thought I would ask, especially seeing as he is a fellow Texas Warrior !

I am not sure what they keep going on about "The Fourth Eagle Squadron" ??? Never heard of a Fourth, only the three fighter squadrons, the No. 71, No. 121 and the No. 133 Squadrons.

Anyway, the newspaper clipping stated he flew in the raid that stopped Goering's speech puts F/O Charles S. Young with the RAF No. 105 Squadron, which a couple of months later he transferred over to the USAAF

I wonder if the author mean’t the 4th Fighter Group USAAF. At the end of September 1942, all three Eagle Squadrons were absorbed into the U.S. Army Air Force. The three squadrons became the 4th Fighter Group??

Not sure what they are talking about, they say the "4" Eagle Squadron, but all 3 RAF Eagle Squadrons transferred to the 4th Fighter Group. so the research goes on.
