Canadian Army, Hardmeyer and Spencer ????

Post by georgetanksherman » Sat Nov 27, 2021 1:23 pm

Greetings all, turned to Army for a moment and need to see if anyone can help with these two warriors, I cannot find what their Rank or Unit was

1) Frank J. Hardmeyer, Albany, New York, his bio says after graduating collage as a teacher in Albany, New York, he enlisted in the Canadian Army, do not know the unit he was assigned, was captured during the Dieppe Raid, P.O.W. till 1945, Released from the Army July of 1945. I searched the casualty list for Dieppe and cannot find his name on the list.

2) Hugh M. Spencer, Lynn, Massachusetts, died December 21, 2005, cannot find what unit this warrior was with, also checked the Dieppe Casualty list and cannot find him there

Any help with these two warriors would be appreciated, Thanks and Cheers

George

Hardmeyer’s and Spencer name shows up under the “Quebec Regiment” on Dieppe casualty list. Only Regiments from Quebec on the raid were:

Fusiliers Mont-Royal, and
Three platoons of the Black Watch (Royal Highland Regiment) of Canada

Hardmeyer’s service number of D82796 indicates he originally joine the 1st Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highland Regiment) and Spencer’s service number of D82553 also shows he joined the Black Watch

Thought I’d look for the 3rd man in the first post, Robert L Browning Jr, before you ask

Found him on a Dieppe POW list, says in was in the Essex Scottish Regiment and his service number indicates he originally joined the Essex Scottish Regiment

George, while I had the page open, I copied the entire page and marked Soldier’s with US addresses. They may “not” be American, but a lot probably are. Should keep you busy for a few days. I’ve marked them with a red dot as you can see. Hopefully they are readable to you, if not, let me know and I can send the original to you be e-mail or Dropbox. Oh darn, I see this was continued from Page 12……better go find that and see what I can find for you

Cheers

Wow, now this opened my eyes, I knew that the U.S. Army had a 50-man Ranger Group on the Dieppe Raid in which 3 of them were K.I.A., but I had no idea so many were involved in the Canadian Army, and this is just one Operation.

I always like to do a double check when there is a "Husband of" most time the husband is Canadian or British

And of course, when you throw a bunch at me, I start researching, and I start finding even more, and believe me when I say that I am NOT complaining, neither is my wife Debbie, keeps me out of her hair :-) LOL

Thank You so much for the help, do you know if they have lists like this for the Operations like Anzio, Torch, D-Day and Market Garden ??? I can get the K.I.A. names, but the P.O.W. and Wounded are a bit hard to get !

Cheers

George

Your welcome George, in respect to other operations, I don’t know……I assume that Dieppe was so well covered because it was a major operation (almost a Brigade of Canadians)…….and so many were KIA or POW’s…..

Let me check, to see if I can find other lists under those operations you listed……..

And your right, when you really start looking at it, the number of American’s in Canadian Service during WW2 was a LOT……and of course, this doesn’t include British or other Commonwealth forces…..

Side note, I’m not sure if I ever told you that my wife’s name is the same as yours….
