Researching Romeo R. Fluery
Researching Romeo R. Fluery
A friend & historian from Normandy, who lives in Buron, has a Canadian soldier's belt found right after his family returned to Buron after the Canadians battled their way through. (July 1944) Very solid provenance.
We know the service number ( A. 102826 ). A preliminary search in Normandy has resulted in Romeo R Fluery as the soldier.
However we cannot confirm this here in Canada. We cannot find his unit, or service record and are still trying to connect with the family.
He died in 1987 and digital material, newspaper records etc. are not accessible right now without travel and in person searches. The usual obituary is quite different in 1987 and give us no information on his wartime service.
Any thoughts on where we could look with the service # through available records?
Thanks all.

Re: Researching Romeo R. Fluery
I suspect the last name is Fleury rather than Fluery. If that is the case, this may be the fellow,

Re: Researching Romeo R. Fluery
As he did not die during the war his WW2 record would not be available online and would have to be requested from Library and Archives Canada. I haven't found anything in Military Medals, Honours and Awards.

That regimental number doesn't seem to fit into any ranges accounted for,

Re: Researching Romeo R. Fluery
If it is the Romeo R. Fleury of Belle River, than this obituary would be that of his brother, with many relatives listed,

FLEURY, Joseph Adelard It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Joseph Adelard Fleury at the age of 86, into the loving arms of his saviour Jesus, on October 14, 2005, at Metropolitan Campus. Sadly missed by his loving wife Imelda (nee Tremblay) of 60 years and their children: Carmelle and James Mills, Annette and James Ponic, Louise and Silvio Venerus, Jo Anne and Frank Diana, Allen Fleury, and Claudette and Peter Farah. Much loved pepe to Erin Mills and her brother the late Sean Bellemore (2005); Steven and Joey Ponic; Kevin and Steve Venerus; Eric and David Diana; and Paul, Angela, and Leesa Farah. Predeceased by brothers Arsene, Achille, Romeo, and Edmond; and sisters Leah, Florida, Juliette and Theresa. Dear brother-in-law to Magella and Felix Mailloux, Dorothy and Mae Tremblay. Adelard was a life-long resident of Belle River except for the 5 years he served his country as a Canadian Grenadier Guard in Europe during WW II. Also, he was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Br. #399 in Belle River and a retiree of Chrysler Canada. However, he was best known as the fiddle player for the Good Neighbour Fun Band. Special heartfelt thanks to Dr. Li Wan Po for his special care. Visitation will be held at the Melady Funeral Home, 572 Notre Dame Street (728-1500), on Monday, Oct-ober 17, 2005, from 2-5 p.m. & 7-9 p.m. A legion service will be held under the auspices of R.C.L. Br. #399 on Monday at 7:00 p.m. and parish prayers will be held at 8:00 p.m. Family has requested for everyone to gather at St. Simon & St. Jude Church for a Mass of Christian Burial on Tuesday, October 18, 2005, at 10:30 a.m. Interment at St. Simon & St. Jude Cemetery. In kindness, memorial donations to the Heart & Stroke Foundation or to the Multiple Sclerosis Society would be appreciated by the family. A tree will be planted in memory of Adelard Fleury in the Melady Heritage Forest. A dedication service will be held September 24, 2006. All are welcome.

Re: Researching Romeo R. Fluery
Service number is 1 District Depot ( Windsor), so not terribly helpful.

Re: Researching Romeo R. Fluery
Though that does lend credence to the idea that it's Romeo R. Fleury of Belle River as that is about 25km outside of Windsor.

Re: Researching Romeo R. Fluery
I've contacted one of Romeo R. Fleury, of Belle River's, Grandnieces, Leesa Farah on Facebook. Perhaps she, or the family can provide a confirmation on the regimental number,
Hi Phil! Yes that is my grand uncle!
