The Hooke, Plumpton (J5) D-Day Marshalling Area Camp

Post by jcressey » Mon Apr 06, 2020 3:55 pm

Good Afternoon,

Jason Here from the UK, I have been trying to carry out some research of the J5 Marshalling area in Chailey East Sussex.

I saw some maps of Marshalling areas but not Area J.

Does anyone have any pictures / maps / or general information regarding this camp or anyone who was based there?

Thanks you all !

Evening,

Yes I did, You may be more familiar with Chailey Airfield, The section of land im referring just a couple of fields across, the house called 'The Hooke' was taken over and housed Canadian Officers. Im keen to see if anyone knows who may of trained there, or any photos. Long shot I know ;)

Thanks again

Still searching, the Home itself (if it was Camp J5) was used by Sword Beach troops before D Day. Canadian’s would not have been in this area while marshalling for D Day.......BUT, of course Canadian troops were all over that area during the war, training etc..so I’m trying to find out more, and if a specific unit used the house etc

Have you attempted to contact the current owner of the house, who may have information on its history:

I believe he is - James Philip Blencowe TILLARD

Evening, I cannot thank you enough for your extensive research you have done, yes me and my brother spoke with James, his is aware of locations of certain places that the Canadians were, pointed out where the tank tracks used to be ect, however that’s about it!

Very interesting reading your research, and yes that’s the write Hooke house and the maps correct too!

Thanks again, I’ll keep digging!
