No. 47 General Transport Company, RCASC

Post by anblasi15 » Tue May 21, 2019 10:48 am

My Great-Granduncle served in the No. 47 General Transport Company, RCASC, during World War II. I am looking for more on this unit.

I know it was a transport unit of the First Canadian Army, landed at Juno June 9, and served in France, Belgium, Holland, and Germany.

I would be forever grateful if I can find out more about this unit. I am especially interested in rosters, war diaries that describe the unit's movements, and especially pictures. All I have found so far is that the unit served with the First Canadian Army and the names of those in the unit who died during the war. Anything helps.

My relative as Donald Lawrence Lemoine (he switched his first and middle names) from June 26, 1941, to September 27, 1945. I have his service record.

P.S. I believe in 1942 this unit was at first known as the 61st General Transport Company. Thanks!

578 is the unit serial number of 47 Cdn A Tpt Coy RCASC. This can be confirmed by the attached document (obtained from the War Diary of 2 Cdn Gen Tpt Coln in the British National Archives) approx Mar/Apr 1945

This unit was part of 1st Canadian Army Transport Column Headquarters with 45, 47, 63 and 64 Transport Companies.

Can you give me the date, from his records, that he embarked for England.

Thank you for your help! I appreciate the document.

He embarked for England on December 12, 1941, and arrived at Liverpool on December 23, 1941. I am guessing his ship was in Convoy HX. 164. When he arrived he was a driver with the Canadian 2nd Heavy Anti-Aircraft Regiment. He was transferred to the 47th Transport on May 7, 1942. I can put on pictures of these files if it helps.

He was at the time a driver with the Canadian 2nd Heavy Anti-Aircraft Regiment. On May 7, 1942, he was assigned to the 61st Transport Company, which became the 47th.

Thanks. Let me see what I can find so far. As you know, the War Dairies of the 47th are not on line yet, so to see them you would have to go to LAC Ottawa. But let me see what is available

Cheers

Thank you for searching.

I had a look through his records and did not see anything that would further this search. His is the only name, and it only mentions his movements within units, rather than places.

I did see that those diaries have not yet been digitized. I am hoping to get to Ottawa at some point to look at them.

Actually, anything you can give me on his dates of transfer between units etc. Their are war diaries available for other units, and i might be able to find info on him. Also, you said he “embarked” for England on the 12th Dec 1941....and you thought it was convoy HX164. This convoy “left” Halifax on the 8th Dec.....so not sure he would have been on this convoy. Again, his records may give me clues.

But of course, your call. If you’d rather share the information privately, you can always PM me on this site with your e-mail, and then I can respond directly back to you and not put anything up on this site. Your decision.....were here to help

Cheers
