Map of Force’J’ LST Anchorage Positions in Southampton Area
Re: Map of Force’J’ LST Anchorage Positions in Southampton Area
Possible locations for D and E Trot.
I noticed for Group 312(g.h) it mentions D Trot and Hamble. If you look near near Hamble you will see:
Area 15 has two LCT mooring locations ID by numbers 1 and 2. Most likely not the right one.
Area 16 has berthing rows A to G. Rows D and E seem to be berthing lines, maybe trot lines. This could be the location for 1H LCTs.

The CO’s LCT was identified in the Unit Landing Tables documents. I sent that to Gary by e-mail I believe
Re: Map of Force’J’ LST Anchorage Positions in Southampton Area
Here’s the document. CO was in LTIN Serial 1107
Re: Map of Force’J’ LST Anchorage Positions in Southampton Area
Just a follow up.
From this document it tells you which LCT’s ‘A’ & ‘B’ Squadron Commanders
Serial 1001 - MIKE GREEN - Major Brooks
Serial 1005 - NAN GREEN - Major Duncan

Another Follow up.........working with all the War Diary and Landing Table documents, you can START to figure out “who” was on each of the Landing Craft Tank for ‘A’ Squadrons DD Tanks
From the info below, written by Major Duncan you can see the following (Each Troop had 3 tanks, and Squadron HQ had 4 tanks)
Yellow - 1st Troop
Green - 2nd Troop
Blue - 3rd Troop
Black - 4th Troop
Purple - Squadron HQ
AND, we know that the Squadron OC was in LTIN Serial 1001

Re: Map of Force’J’ LST Anchorage Positions in Southampton Area
Here is my simple attempt at putting the info in one chart.
Still some unanswered questions, vast majority is here.
This was based off of the A Sqn AAR which you have posted, as well, from all of the other documents, and reading the history.
LCT 441 loading is different, this is due to the history book that describes this LCT unloading. In some cases it is contradictory, but I think I have it pretty close. Unless Brandon Conron had it wrong, which is quite possible.
What is interesting is that this document shows 19 tanks, clearly, where the load table only show 18 tanks per Sqn. 2 x LCTs (middle two) with five tanks each and two (flanking LCTS) with 4 tanks each.

Re: Map of Force’J’ LST Anchorage Positions in Southampton Area
This document tells us ONE of the LCT’s that was carrying the DD Tanks of ‘B’ Squadron
From this list, we can confirm it was carrying 5 tanks, ONE which was the Squadron Rear Link (Capt R Wildgoose as commander) and ONE which was the Squadron 2 i/c (Capt H.L Smucks as commander) and the other three tanks were commanded by Cpl Cooks, Cpl Pikes, and Sgt Gristeys
I’m not sure which Troops the last three tanks would be part of
CORRECTION: from your info Above which you just posted, this would be LCT 422

See my info above......has info on who was on LCT 422
Which was Squadron Rear Link (Capt R Wildgoose as commander) and ONE which was the Squadron 2 i/c (Capt H.L Smucks as commander) and the other three tanks were commanded by Cpl Cooks, Cpl Pikes, and Sgt Gristeys
This would mean Lt McLeod and Capt Wildgoose and Cpl Pike were in different LCT’s from your post????
Re: Map of Force’J’ LST Anchorage Positions in Southampton Area
YOUR RED NOTE on your diagram, suggest that Sgt Bailey was on Maj Duncan’s LCT 372.........my information CONFIRMS that Cpl Pike’s tanks was on LCT 422 with Capt Smucks and Capt Wildgoose, NOT on LCT 372 with Maj Duncan (unless their were TWO Cpl Pike’s)........so having Sgt Bailey on LCT 372 makes sense to me???afinney63 wrote: ↑Sat Mar 21, 2020 4:11 pmHere is my simple attempt at putting the info in one chart.
