HMS Habbakuk - an aircraft carrier built from ICE

Post by Temujin » Wed Dec 05, 2018 12:27 am

A link to a story about HMS Habbakuk......the proposal to build a giant aircraft carrier, out of ice to hold 300 aircraft, which would be “placed” in U Boat alley.

Prototypes were built in Alberta.........enjoy

So many bizarre ingenuitive plans to get an edge, I'll have to start making some posts for the front page about these sorts of curiosities -- thanks!

I agree Phil. Some became common knowledge but many did not show the light until years later due to secrecy laws etc. Their great to see the “thinking outside the box” so to speak in order to help win the war, even though some never went further than “paper” but these idea’s could advance other, more traditional construction or defence items.

Apparently the refrigeration coils (?) of a prototype can still be seen by scuba divers under the waters of Patricia Lake in Alberta.
