Good morning Phil, just want to thank you and Temjin for your assistance with locating some information about my grandfather … it was exciting to see his name on the list for his service chevrons … I will be sharing this information with my Mom when I see her this weekend (so your timing is excellent).

It was also interesting to read the War Diary for the period from August 1 - 31, 1944 … which then caused me to wonder if any form of regimental history was ever written for the 2nd Canadian Heavy Anti-Aircraft Regiment, do you happen to know? Or could you recommend any further readings on the topic of the Canadian Artillery during the Second World War (I previously read George G. Blackburn’s trilogy about “The Guns” of Normandy/of Victory, and Where the Hell are the Guns, all of which were very informative accounts of this wartime experiences).

Also with the information you provided, i.e., the name of the Commanding Officer (LCol Aeneas McBean Bell-Irving), I learned that Bell-Irving was from Vancouver, served in the First World War, was a Vancouver City Councillor from 1962 - 66, and had had his medals stolen in the early 1960s during a Break and Enter at his residence. The medals were subsequently recovered by Vancouver Police in 2008, and later returned to the family. I also learned that he was the Uncle of former B.C. Lieutenant Governor Henry Pybus Bell-Irving (who had his own distinguished military career with the Seaforth Highlanders), who coincidentally I meet in the early 1980’s when I served in the Canadian Forces.

All-in-all, the information you provided lead to a enjoyable afternoon of digging into a small aspect Canada’s military history .. many thanks. Steven

Steven, I posted “A Brief History of the 2nd Heavy Anti Aircraft Regiment” that was in the units war diaries. Here’s a link to that very brief history on this site:

Also, if you look under “General WW2”, I posted more info on each Battery in the Regiment, which included some more Nominal Rolls

In chatting with my Mom over the weekend about my Grandfather (Gunner W. A. Reed), who served in the 2nd Can HAA Rent, RCA, she shared an "Inventory of Kit Sent to No. 1 CDN Surplus Kit Storage Unit" prepared by my Grandfather on April 26, 1944. I assume from this document, that Canadian soldiers were sending their civilian clothes for storage in the spring of 1944 prior to the upcoming invasion. The inventory clearly shows the names of his Battery and Regiment. The penmanship is also very impressive.

Hi, fascinating to see the nominal roll of 2nd HY AA Regt. from 1941 ... I'm trying to confirm my grandfather (i.e., Gunner W. A. Reed, D-7239) served with this regiment during the second world war ... he likely enlisted sometime in 1940/41 ... I remember hearing his stories about the 3.7-inch AA Gun. Are there any other nominal rolls from (still existing) from later in the war?

It looks like our grandfathers served together - Sgt L.G. Hughes - if I find any more details I'll be sure to pass info along. Unfortunately, my grandfather did not ever talk about his time in the war.

Hello. I happened on this site as I research my father's (Ronald de la Ronde) travels through Europe during the war. My father served with the 2nd Heavy Anti-Aircraft Regiment of the RCA (Montreal division). Not sure which battery. He enlisted in July 1941 and arrived in England in September 1941. Do you know how I might find information on the regiment's routes through Europe?

Thank you.

There is a brief history, which will give you some idea of movement, while waiting for other responses, as mentioned in a post above.
