Hello. I happened on this site as I research my father's (Ronald de la Ronde) travels through Europe during the war. My father served with the 2nd Heavy Anti-Aircraft Regiment of the RCA (Montreal division). Not sure which battery. He enlisted in July 1941 and arrived in England in September 1941. Do you know how I might find information on the regiment's routes through Europe?

Thank you.
Karen,

The Regiment War Diaries are available at the Heritage Canadiana website https://heritage.canadiana.ca/. The Roll numbers to search are:

Karen, BSBSM has given you information to look for information for yourself…….but in the mean time,I’ll try and find more Norminal Rolls on the Regiments shipment to England to Canada.

I’ve found them and the ship they are on now, I’m going thru and adjusting them now (mainly for quality of reading, I can adjust the typing on some of the documents that are HARD to read, so they are clearer)………as soon as I have that done, I’ll post that information up and post a link so you can look at it. So far I have NOT spotted his name, but will look more closely when I have the adjustments finished.

As for “where they went and when”, th links BSBSM have given you will give you most of that information BUT, its a slow slog, as the files do not have a search engine, so you have to go “page by page” to find the right files…….look for the WAR DIARIES pages (they are spread thru these files)…..they will give you the location of the Regiment each day of the war and what they were doing.

On Question, as your father last name is “de la Ronde”……..would you know if he went by that “full last name” or did he shorten it in the records, eg “La Ronde or LaRonde or Ronde”???

Cheers, and I’m working on it

Karen, here’s a link to the Nominal Roll of the Regiment on Embarkation to England

I did NOT spot your fathers name in them. BUT…..I noticed the 14th Heavy Battery was not on the list (8th, 11th and Regimental HQ, Sigs etc)

Karen, can I ask how you know he served with this unit? I have gone thru more than a year of war diaries (July 1941 to Sept 1942, and I haven’t spotted his name at all on any of the posting etc. Have you his military records, and do you know his Regimental Number (service number)?

thank you so much Temujin and BSBSM. I'll look through the information you provided. I'll see what other information I can dig up such as regimental number etc. While he signed up with the Montreal division, he was from St. Andrew's East, Quebec. Thanks again.

Temujin- I misread one of your questions, but my father recently mentioned that that was the regiment he was in. He would not have gone by any name other than 'de la Ronde. Thanks!

1st Heavy AA Battery, 2nd Heavy Anti Aircraft Regt - Final Nominal Roll

His Regimental Number was D118458

More info…….once I found out that they spelled his last name as Delaronde, then I’m able to find more. Here’s his return to Canada on the French Liner Ile de France

temujin, thank you so so much. I find this fascinating. Hope to find more info. That's also his buddy, George Dewitt, listed below him in the nominal role. I will be visiting my father in January and hope to probe a little more, if he's up to it. Cheers!

Your welcome Karen, it you want you CAN order his military records. As he is still alive, he would have to sign the documentation to request them. I might suggest that if you want to know more, I would do it now if possible………when he passes away, his records then will be “locked” an only opened after 20 years after his passing.

My own Uncle, who is still with us at 98, I’m trying to see if my cousins will order his military records for the same reason. He served with the Calgary Highlanders and was wounded twice during the war.

If you wish to peruse this, let me know and I can give you the links to the proper paperwork that you can fill out, and the one page “permission” for him to sign to give you permission to request his records.

Just let me know

Cheers
