I do appreciate your effort on this, Temujin. Thank you.

So I guess the date of 6 December, 1939 in my original post would coincide with their departure from Montreal, not Halifax.
Corrrect Mike.....they left Montreal on the 6th Dec, and arrived in Halifax on the 7th Dec.

They “may” have then embarked on their ship that day.....which is the mostly likely occurrence......as the entire 1st Cdn Division was arriving in Halifax that day and the next few days, so instead of putting them in barracks (if their WAS enough accommodation, which was probably NOT likely) they would have moved directly to the ships in my opinion.

The Convoy did not actually sail until the 10th Dec 1939.....probably again takes some time to put all those men on the ships over a few days.

My next job is to see if I can confirm WHICH SHIP......we know the numbers was E6......now to just find the number in a record

Mike, I’m getting a little closer. I found this info:

Saskatoon Light Infantry (MG). One half of the battalion embarked on board the "Duchess of Bedford" and the other half on board the "Aquitania".

On the SLI (MG) records, it says that 1/2 the Battalion embarked on E6........and we KNOW that the RMR (MG) also embarked on E6........SO

That narrows down the search the the RMR(MG) sailed in EITHER the Duchess of Bedford OR the Aquitania

Still search

Your welcome Mike. I can help you more. I see your grandfather transferred to the RCASC, and their may be more I can help you with that. BUT I probably can help decipher his military records for you, and tell you more “where he was when” so to speak. So if you will like that type of help I will need to see his records. I’ll send you a Private Message with my e-mail and we can discuss from their.

IN respect to lists, again the War Diaries of units he served with will help (a bit) so if I know with who he served (which units) and can possible help......I have almost 90 Gb of personnel data that I’ve saved over the years that may help. Also they did make a list of EVERYONE that boarded a ship to England. So his name will be on a list, I just can’t find it yet (they do exist, again at LAC)

Lastly, I take it they did NOT send a photo with his records. They DID take photo’s of EVERYONE who served for their ID Cards, so they will have one in LAC Ottawa. You could try to see if LAC will send it......or hire a private researcher to check the files and send a photo. A list of ‘private researchers” are available on LAC’s website

Cheers

Oops......I made a mistake Mike......I accidentally (seniors moment) answered YOUR POST, using “your post” and deleted the info in that post.....so that’s why the above looks strange (a post from you but the info is mine).....

Sorry about that, it’s because I’m a Forum moderator that I can do that

I’ll look to see if I can find your original post in the files and re-post it.....and correct my mistake

I thought it odd too, Temujin. No worries.

I did fire off a couple of emails to you, and have just finished scanning a few pages for you to review, another email incoming shortly.

His time there should be more present in the files you have access to..
He passed away in 1957, 12 or so years before I was born, so this research is as I've stated..to finally "meet" my Grandfather.
Again, thanks for all your help.

Mike

Getting your files now. It may take me a couple of days to go thru them and see “whats happening when” and then to see if I have any research info on specific units.

Also, I’m trying the find the file at LAC that holds the records for Convoy TC 1. If I can find the right file, I can then give that too you and you can request it be digitized. I’ll give you more info on how to do that as soon as I can find the right file

I still haven't figured out what ship he sailed on, on his way across the pond.
I did call the Sudbury Legion (Br. 76) to see if they had any information, all they had was that he was indeed a member, his Regimental number, date(s) of service, his discharge, and death information.

Sorry Mike, as I’ve said I’ve narrowed it down to either the
Duchess of Bedford or the
Aquitania

My suggestion, Contact the Royal Montreal Regiment museum, and check with their curator, and see if they have any further information. They “may” have the Regiments War Diaries, and these could possibly tell you the ship they were on
