W/O M.E. Soules

Post by georgetanksherman » Tue Aug 28, 2018 4:33 pm

Looking for clarification on W/O 1 M.E. Soules. I have him with the R.C.A.F., R/127776, with R.C.A.F. No. 403 Squadron, lost in Spitfire, MJ572 on August 28, 1944. Lost while attacking M.T. in the Beauvais area.

Here is my question, He is listed as an American who joined the R.C.A.F. but it looks like his parents are from Orilla, Ontario, Canada.

Would really appreciate clearing this up for me …. thank You in advance !!!! :-)

I have him as Milton Eldon Soules. My records show he was KIA flying Spitfire MK 846 and was engaged in low-level attack against enemy motor transport when his Spitfire was hit by flak. His aircraft rolled over and crashed near Beauvais, France. Due to the low altitude WO Soules was unable to bail out.

I’ll check his attestation papers for family info

Looked thru his records, they confirm he was born in Detroit, Mich.......but both his parents were Canadian citizen’s, so I would suggest he had dual citizenship.

Thanks as always Temujin, the info on the spitfire came from the Spitfire web page

http://allspitfirepilots.org/aircraft/s ... ne=&notes=

MJ572 LFIX CBAF
33MU 22-12-43 84GSU 13-3-44 312S FAAC 30-4-44 [Hit by flak while attacking MT in Beauvais area 28-8-44 W/O M E Soules killed] Scottish Aviation 312S 22-7-45 sold CzechAF 30-8-45

MK846 LFIX CBAF
39MU 12-3-44 1S 14-4-44 ros 3501SU 12-10-44 MedAAF 16-5-45 SOC 22-11-45

Also on the last page that you loaded also said that he was in MJ572, so situation normal, it all depends on what page you are reading at the time :-) All confusing :-)

Found this on the "Royal Air Force commands" forum, seems this has been a question for awhile now. Also found where it said that MK846 belonged to R.A.F. No. 1 Squadron

403 Squadron - 28-8-1944

In "They Shall Grow Not Old" (Allison) and Vol.2 of "2nd TAF" (Shores/Thomas) is mentioned that W/O%B9 Milton Eldon SOULES, RCAF R/127776, was flying Spitfire MK846 and crashed near Beauvais, France. Also have info from a fellow historian who said that the serial was MJ572.

"Spitfire the History" (Morgan/Shacklady) has for these serials:
MJ572 - Sold Czechoslovakia 30-8-45
MK846 - MAAF 16-5-45, SOC 27-11.
What's in the ORB for this date and W/O Soules ?
Regards and thanks in advance for your help.
Henk.

I think it was MJ572 and the aircraft was repaired

MJ572:33MU 22-12-43 84GSU 13-3-44 312S FAAC 30-4-44 [Hit by flak while attacking MT in Beauvais area 28-8-44 W/O M E Soules killed] Scottish Aviation 312S 22-7-45 sold Czech AF 30-8-45

perhaps he force landed at Beauvais, but died of injuries, but the aircraft was repairable.....

No problem George. When I found the records and they confirm the aircraft number.......I could have gone back and amended my first post, but I decided to leave it......its just all part of the “search” for info. My first post reference is from “They Shall Not Grow Old”.......but althought a great source, their records can be “suspect” sometimes.

So although I had that reference, I carried on with the search of the 403 Squadrons Operational Record Books and was able to confirm the actual Aircraft, and some additional info (that he was new to the Squadron) and he was on a major “Armed Recce” with the entire Squadron.

And was able to confirm his citizenship for you (Dual) as you can see from the records

Looking forward to your next quest for info

Cheers

Temujin, :-) Oh, trust me, that is a good learning tool, don't always quit when you find your first answer, keep going on the research, CWGC taught me that lesson a long time ago, just because it is in black and white does not make it correct ! Thanks for the help. Just about finished off the RCAF 402 Squadron, so starting on the No. 403 Squadron. :-)

Thank You for the help on this and prior questions !!!!

Cheers !
