Avro Lancaster, KB727, No. 419 Squadron took off on July 4, 1944 from Middleton St. George, U.K. on a bombing mission to Villeneuve, France made it to the target area to drop it's bomb load on return was attacked by a Ju-88, the aircraft gunners were able to return fire turning the enemy fighter away from the attack, a few minutes later the aircraft was receiving hits, but this time it was from a "Friendly" R.A.F. B-17 Fortress, the aircraft was badly damaged and had to be abandoned, all the crew members were able to bail out of the aircraft, but eventually all of the crew members were captured. on the way to Buchenwald Concentration Camp, F/O Stevenson was able to get out of the Cattle Car and escape back to the U.K. Luckily German Luftwaffe Officers had heard about Allied Airmen that were taken to Buchenwald, so they went there to investigate, and had all the Allied Airmen sent to P.O.W. Camps prior to being executed. May they all be Remembered !
